Club Meeting - 7th March - Annual Stage Magic Competition

The last meeting was held on 7th March and was the annual stage competition for both juniors and seniors, and was well attended with 16 members, 9 family members and 18 guests in attendance.

The junior competition for the Don Simpson Cup and a cash prize of £20 was held first and James Gilroy, Robbie Wood and Oliver Ward each presented excellent performances. James’ act included the production of a giant wand which, when waved over a sword cabinet, enables to introduction of his assistant Emily. Together they produced and disappeared a candle, a dove pan effect, a mirror box and rabbit production and finally the sword cabinet illusion. Robbie was next up and his performance included the new version of the Vanishing Bandanna and a very slick cups and balls routine. Oliver concluded the junior competition with effects which included appearing mini umbrellas, knife thro’ arm, a ‘bullet’ catch illusion, linking rings, magic domino and directional arrow routines.

A short interval was followed by the announcement that the winner of the junior competition by a narrow margin was Oliver who was presented with his cash prize and will be presented with the cup at the next meeting.

Following the drawing of the raffle, the four seniors competing for the Bill Charlesworth Memorial Cup were Robert Dean (Cadywould), Danny Slade, Lee Pankhurst and Mick Geraghty. Dean was first up and his act included a Yellow Pages prediction, the production of a freely selected red backed card in a sealed blue backed pack, and a very baffling prediction of which of 4 volunteers would draw a particular sketch in a predicted colour and would sit in a numbered seat.

Next up was Danny who included a tossed out deck routine predicting six different cards and several mid reading effects; and a word prediction from a randomly chosen book.

Lee Pankhurst then took the floor and his act included the answer to three random numbers added together, the prediction of the location of a pin stuck into a map by a blindfolded Terry, the production of a lottery ticket bearing the numbers suggested by members of the audience, and finally the unrolling of a paper scroll which contained all the details and predictions of the act he had just performed.

Last up was Mick who started with Terry lending him £20 which was put into a wage envelope. Two other envelopes were produced and after shuffling were numbered 1, 2 and 3. A free choice eliminated two envelopes which were shredded and the £20 was found in the final envelope. This was followed by a dollar bill repeat routine using a very amusing rhyme, and his act concluded with an hilarious chain through body routine which unfortunately was not fully successful despite a hasty second try.

Another excellent competition and following the collection of the judges’ papers, the winner by a couple of points was Mick who was awarded another £20 cash prize and will receive his trophy on his next visit.

Unfortunately, due to illness Adrian was not able to be with us, but as Oliver’s father was, with permission from all present, filming the proceedings, we hope that we might be able to have a copy and include it in the club’s archives.

Final thanks must go to our judges who all did a super job and made the evening run smoothly.
