Club Meeting - 7th February - Lecture by Wayne Fox
Our last meeting was held on 7th February and was the keenly anticipated lecture from Wayne Fox (no relation!). With a sizeable audience and a number of first time visitors as guests, the evening began with Adrian and Rick going through the parish notices. This included the induction of our newest member, Oliver Ward who had taken and passed his audition the month before. Well done and welcome to the club Ollie! He was presented with his membership certificate, badge and card.
So on to Wayne’s lecture, and what a great night it turned out to be. Wayne was a superb lecturer who spoke honestly and candidly about the business of performing magic for a living, giving away many trade secrets about how to succeed and gain customers. But the magic was really strong too.
He started out shuffling a pack of cards which suddenly were back in the box, and went on to present his four card production which culminated in the appearance of a playing card underneath his previously clearly empty hand. Quite a few gasps from the audience at that one! And again at the explanation! There was a neat mind reading routine involving the words printed on a card box flap; a nice ending for any rubber band routine involving the appearance of a ball of bands; some interesting new takes on various sleights including the slip force; a great ‘Sharpie through coin’ effect (start practicing that Goshman pinch – I have!); a ‘black 8’ routine involving an eight of spades and a black pool 8 ball; and a lovely prediction effect in which a sliding tile puzzle which had been circulating around the audience the whole night, turned out to match a prediction sealed and held by Adrian before the start of the lecture.
Wayne was also kind enough to donate a couple of his dealer items to the raffle – a really great gesture!
A tremendous lecture then from Wayne, who was more than happy to stay and chat to anyone about his work, and also keen to help others start to build their own business in magic. His friend Jake who came along with him, manned the dealer table which was loaded with tricks, lecture notes and DVDs and a fairly brisk sale went on.
Everyone I’ve spoken to since has commented on how good the evening was, and what a nice chap Wayne was, so a great time was had by all!
