3rd October - Annual Close Up Magic Competition

The club’s last meeting was the annual close-up magic competition with various members competing for the junior and senior close-up titles and trophies - the Wilf Dent Memorial cup for the juniors and the Robert Ferro trophy for the seniors.

Entering in the senior competition this year were Richard Graham, Leon Rye, Mick Geraghty, Adrian Fox, Marcus Jahrling and Mike Davis; and the junior competitors were Oliver Ward, James Gilroy and Robbie Wood. Each act, lasting between 8 and 12 minutes, had to be performed for three different audiences, with a maximum of 50 points for each magician awarded by our three independent judges.

Contestants were judged by magical content, presentation, appearance and entertainment value with final scores being added to reveal the winners.

Our competition nights are always great fun to take part in (if a bit nerve wracking – there’s nothing to make you nervous more than performing for other magicians!) and the audience seemed to have a great time watching some excellent effects by all our performers. Huge thanks must go to our judges who have a really difficult task; and of course to everyone who entered the competition for giving of their best and entertaining our guests so well.

In the end the competition was very close and the standard was top notch with some fine performances from all contestants. Once the scores were added and verified, it turned out that there were very few points separating people, but in the end, the winners for 2010 were Adrian Fox for the seniors and Oliver Ward for the juniors. They take home the trophies to polish for the year and will of course be formally presented with them at the annual dinner later in the month.

Well done and thanks to everyone for taking part – it was a superb evening.
