3rd September - Annual Close Up Magic Competition

The club’s September meeting was our annual close-up magic competition. It was great to see so many members enter for an opportunity to win the trophies – the Wilf Dent memorial cup for the juniors and the Robert Ferro trophy for the senior competition.

With two juniors entering and eight seniors it was a well fought contest that saw an evening of great magic with a variety of effects on display for audiences at the three tables. We were treated to a wide range of magical effects and it’s great to see the standard improve year on year. Taking part for the seniors were Mike Leach, Jake Dolman, Mystic Mick, Chris Campos, Oliver Ward, Robbie Wood, Olivia Cross and Derek Martin; and for the juniors it was Matty Turner and Joe Hoskin. For Jake and Joe it was their first time entering one of our competitions so congratulations go to the two of them for stepping up and having a go in what was a hotly contested competition.

Out three independent judges had a tough time separating out the winners but they finally managed to come up with some scores to give us our results. So in the end, huge congratulations go to our two winners, Matty Turner for the juniors and Ollie Ward for the seniors and they retain both the titles and trophies for the coming year. Everyone taking part should know that the difference in scores wasn’t all that far apart, so even if you didn’t win this year you should take encouragement from the small margins that decided the winners.

Thanks go to everyone that took part, to our three judges (never an easy job!) and to our audiences who made it an enjoyable and entertaining evening.
