7th May - Annual Stage Magic Competition
The club’s May meeting was our annual stage magic competition, and this year we had six entries, one junior and five senior.
For the seniors, we had Jake Dolman who appeared on stage for the very first time and entertained with a series of card based effects.
The Normans, Keith and Jane, took to the stage to show us a new double act with Jane divining various messages sent telepathically by Keith and other audience members.
Mystic Mick was his usual flamboyant self, with a number of gags and well rehearsed comedy mental effects.
Thomas Edwin presented a silk production box to music and a chair prediction routine.
Simon Stott showed us his Magic Circle audition piece which included a version of stabbed.
And for the juniors, Matty Turner presented the Sheer Luck book test and his version of stabbed – a popular routine this year!
Our three judges had a tough time separating out the winners but came to a conclusion based on entertainment value, presentation and magical content. As Matty was the only junior to enter, we set a threshold of 75 points out of 100, the aim being to score higher than this in order to win the trophy.
In the end, after the scores were double checked and verified, the winners of the stage competition for 2017 were declared to be Mystic Mick (aka Mick Geraghty) and Matty Turner. Congratulations go to all our members who entered this year; and well done to Matty and Mick for both holding on to the trophies for the second year in a row. Thanks also go to our judges who took the time and trouble to mark the acts for us, and to Chris Campos for the photographs.
