Club Show - 17th & 18th September - Leigh Regatta

On Saturday and Sunday 17th and 18th September, we attended the Leigh Regatta for a second year, as a way of promoting the club but mainly to pass out leaflets and encourage ticket sales for the Dixon Studio shows coming up next February. When Wally and Audrey arrived on Saturday morning it turned out that our allocated stall wasn't really suitable as people could walk behind the table - not ideal for some close-up performances! So, following a chat with the organisers and a move of location, the day got under way - and a busy day it was too. Wally and Audrey were joined at various times by Don and Carol, Leon, Ray and Doug. After a windy start, the weather settled down and we were kept really busy until we decided to call it a day at around 4.30.

On the Sunday, we arrived to find that someone else had started setting up their wares on our stall! After a complaint to the organisers we were placed in a different spot in the same area, but it turned out to be a real problem for most of the day. As usual we attracted large numbers of people keen to see our magic, but the stall holders either side of us became really unpleasant, accusing us of blocking their trade! Still, by attracting people on the other side of the road we managed to keep the magic flowing and people entertained; and lots of show leaflets were passed out with a good number of promised ticket sales. Wally and Audrey were back with Adrian, Stuart C, Tracy, James G and new member Craig B in attendance, all of whom did well with the crowds passing by. In the end the rain got the better of us and we called it a day at around 4.30 again.

In the end, a useful exercise which I hope those that attended enjoyed for the most part in spite of the problems. The committee will be writing to the organisers to express disappointment with some issues, and we'll have to think carefully about whether or not we want to attend again next year. Attendance from the club was also down on last year and although we were very well represented bu those that came along (huge thanks to everyone that spent some time with us by the way, it was great to have you there) it was a little disappointing that more members couldn't help out for an hour or two.
