Club Night - 5th April
17 members and 4 family members attended April’s meeting. The meeting was re-scheduled as a general club night and the AGM moved to the June meeting because Adrian and Wally were away on holiday, in Florida and the Caribbean respectively.
John Alexander kindly offered to show us his Magic Lantern show and gave a very entertaining half hour going through the history and detail of the very early ‘slideshow’. John’s machine was originally powered by oil lamp to provide the light, but was now converted to run on electricity.
John and his wife showed some amazing slides, many of which were hand painted on to glass only 3 inches wide, and consequently the attention to detail was something to behold. Some of the slides enabled ‘movement’ to be displayed by overlaying and changing the slides, including those circular moving patterns created by kaleidoscopes which I remember as a child.
Following John’s presentation, for which huge thanks are due, members gathered in groups either chatting or showing each other a variety of their latest tricks.
Also at the meeting, BBC Essex attended for a second time to gather more material for their forthcoming show about Southend Sorcerers. As soon as we hear when the programme is to be aired, we’ll pass the information on to you.
