4th October - Annual Junior and Senior Close Up Magic Competitions

On 4th October the club held its annual close up magic competition as usual with various members competing for the junior and senior close-up titles. For the juniors, the Wilf Dent Memorial cup was at stake; and for the seniors, the Robert Ferro trophy.

As always, the contests are open to all our members. Each entrant had to present their close up act, lasting between 8 and 12 minutes,  to three different audiences. Points were awarded by three independent judges against magical content, presentation, appearance and entertainment value.

We ended up with the highest number of entries for the competition in the club's history, with 2 juniors and 8 seniors involved, showing off their skills to a very appreciative audience. Congratulations and thanks go to all members who took part in what was an extremely close competition. James Holdswoth and Robbie Wood competed in the Junior section, and the Seniors included Ray Simpkins, Leon Rye, Ryan Sholem, Adrian Fox, Dean Cadywould, Lewis Clifton, Rob Newson, and Mick Geraghty.

In what was a very entertaining night for our guests and the rest of the audience, Adrian took the senior title.

Unfortunately however, there was a small mistake made with the score addition for the junior competition, and while James Holdsworth was announced as the winner on the night, it was subsequently discovered that in fact some scores had been accidentally transposed. As a result, Robbie Wood is actually the club's junior close-up winner for 2009. The committee are very sorry that this simple mistake occurred and have apologised profusely to both James and Robbie for the error. In future we will ensure that scores are double checked - this has never happened before, and we will make sure that it doesn't happen again.

That said, it was a very enjoyable evening and it was especially nice to see Lee Pankhurst, an ex member, with his family in attendance and considering re-joining.
