2nd March - Annual Stage Magic Competition

Our last meeting at the Bell was the annual junior and senior stage magic competition where members did battle for the much coveted club trophies (the Don Simpson Cup for the juniors and the Bill Charlesworth trophy for the seniors) and a cash prize. It was good to see a well attended meeting with a number of guests in the audience as well.

In the end, as there had been only one entrant for the junior competition, Ryan Sholem, this part of the contest could sadly not go ahead. As it wouldn’t be in the spirit of competition and wouldn’t help to improve magical skills if any person won a contest simply by being the only entrant, the rules state that more than one contestant is required before any club competition can run. Sorry Ryan, we know you were keen to enter but hope you will understand the situation – hopefully we can get more entries next year.
So it was that just three senior members entered the competition. Adrian went first with a rope routine, a blendo bag/20th Century silks effect, finishing with his new animated hanks. Ian and Elisa, otherwise known as the Galithia Connection, came next with some mind reading and a floating table; and Rick finished off with dye tube and Marc Oberon’s Bang On amongst other well performed effects such as 3-Fly, Double Revelation and a jumbo version of Sidewalk Shuffle.

Our three judges had a tough time sorting out a winner, with a close run competition which in the end left just five points out of a possible 150 separating the three entries. But congratulations go to Richard Graham again for winning the competition an unprecedented 5th time in a row – something of a record! Well done Rick – he takes home the Bill Charlesworth trophy (which he’ll now need to clean for another year!) and a cash prize.

The club is keen to encourage other members into performing on stage, and if you'd like some help developing a stage routine or would like to discuss ideas, just ask any of the committee - there are other members with stage experience as well, so don't be afraid to ask for help.

Also at the meeting we welcomed Simon Shapero as our latest member by presenting him with his membership certificate and badge. Welcome to the club Simon! At the same time three more auditions were held for prospective new members – James Holdsworth, Jonah Ripley and Robert Newson all of whom performed very well. Well done chaps – they’ll receive formal membership at the next meeting.
